Does that help at all when applying?Ivy league school - would I have a better chance of getting in if a parent is an alumni?
Yes it does. But primarily if they have had a lasting impact or continuing contribution to the school. If they graduated and dropped of the face of the earth after graduating it won't do you any good.
As long as you are heartfelt in your essays, have good grades and standardized test scores you should be fineIvy league school - would I have a better chance of getting in if a parent is an alumni?
Only if they are a supporting alumi with poltical clout
I'm sure John Kennedy Jr got in because his daddy was President John F. Kennedy.
The strange thing is they turn down students with PERFECT SAT scores but take disabled Eskimo girls from rural Alaska with less than perfect GPA and SAT scores.
Yes it helps -- but not as much as you might think. Someone pointed out that John F Kennedy Jr got into college because of his father. But John Jr didn't get into Harvard (where his father was an alumnus) and did get into Brown (where his father did not go).
Most students get in on their own merits. I used to teach at Penn -- and most of my students had parents who were not Penn graduates.
Yes, a little. If your parents have been regular donors, it matters a lot more. Also helps if they've volunteered (e.g. interviewing applicants, class officers, etc.)
I've read statistical analyses on this topic, read interviews with admissions officers, and... I went to one of the Ivies and am a regular donor.
Of course. How do you think Dubya got into Yale? Hint: it wasn't his brains.
What will also help is learning that ';alumni'; is plural. The singular is ';alumnus'; (male) or ';alumna'; (female). Your spelling is good; that helps when you write your application. You should also use something like ';Gramatik'; to check what you write. Ivies get many more applications than they have space for and a small mistake could be the difference between accepance and rejection.
