Any advice for a parent of an Asperger child?

My son was diagnosed 9 months ago with Aspergers and sensory Integration and I feel we are still having a had time adjusting. I know that it will always be a struggle. He is seeing a therapist on a regular basis and is on triliptal, adderall and risperadone. He is almost 12 and I am very concerned about starting middle school next year.Any advice for a parent of an Asperger child?

Hi Kat,

You will find that most people are hesitant to give advice on this kind of syndrome at the level you are asking for. Those who know someone about the syndrome are not sure that ';advice'; is something they would dare.

May I suggest that there are many advantages to having access to the Internet and that they are available to you just by searching.

Try some of these:

Asperger* support*

Asperger* forum*

Asperger* Parent*

Asperger* Children*

There are many information sites and support groups for those who have the syndrome and those who are family members and even potential employers who have understanding for the advantages of the gifted people who have Asperger's Syndrome.

There are some VERY good books for parents which are not very expensive. Many find these books VERY helpful. I have provided one such book you could consider (less than $20) in the link, below

I sincerely hope I have been of assistance and that you find the peace and clam you are seeking.

Very best from the Cold North!

They have message boards for parents to talk about autism and asperger syndrome. I would highly recommend going to this website. You may find comfort in talking with other parents who are going through or have gone through the same experience. I would also meet with all the teachers and administrators at the school. I have worked within the schools with students who were autistic and aspies, most of the time I find that the school and the staff are very ignorant when it comes to knowing about this disorder.
i am an aspie myself.i think you have to put effort on improving his socialzing skill.also help him to find out a special interest which can be beneficial for him.try developing his interest in math and programming.he will do just fine.
