I'm not talking about games like Grand Theft Auto where the object is killing people, or Halo where you shoot people.
I distinctly remember when I was in first grade, I would play this game and ironically enough, half of the words that were on my spelling list were in the game. The game didn't have voice overs, so I'd have to read it all, and it helped me remember that you don't drop the 'y' and add 'ies' for the word ';toys';, ect.As a parent, do you think video games can be educational for children?
Yes, I feel that video games can be good fro children whether the games are educational or even an adventure or rpg game (without voice overs). As with all things related to screen time, it is fine as long as it is in moderation. An increased understanding of vocabulary, an increased understanding of other cultures, and the development of storytelling is always great for kids. (Granted, books are better, but there is nothing wrong with occasional video games) Educational games are great for when the kids are young. Adventure/rpgs are great for 8-10+. As a parent, do you think video games can be educational for children?
I do think they can, i remember Organ Trail.. i used to think it was just a fun game, as i got older i realized it had an educational meaning and was teaching us things lol. I bought my son a vtech game system when he was 3, he could recognize all his letters after only playing it for about a week.. i think video games can be a great educational tool, it is fun for the child and they do not even realize they are learning... and its so cute to see their faces when they accomplish and beat a level all by themselves.
I believe things like brain train for the DS are wonderful tools, so are games that encourage children to extend their problem solving skills.
I think the same thing about the new Wii games that encourage movement and completing tasks that are physical based, or even sing star that encourage learning music and tones.
The days of sitting on the couch and doing nothing are long gone.
they are great for hand eye coordination.. and they have educational games, but my kids never got into playing those..they like games like i would like, mario, zelda, and stuff like that, and NO those kind of games are not educational whatsoever..we stick to the websites more for the edu stuff..like nickjr.com or starfall.com..
My kids used to LOVE Reader Rabbit for reading and math. They had the Magic School Bus games, Where is Carmen Sandiego, Thinkin' Things (series), etc.
I just asked them which ones were their favorite and my daughter (14) got all excited and said the Reader Rabbit Math was her favorite. My son's was the RR Preschool.
Yes, but it annoys me when I see people pushing their 2 year olds to play educational games.
